Migrating a U.S. Army application to the cloud

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is making a strategic move of its mission support applications to the cloud. Cloud service providers include internal DoD providers such as the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA’s) milCloud and certified commercial cloud service providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) GovCloud.

Working with the U.S. Army on its first program transition to the cloud, Peraton showcased a successful application migration process, achieved an authorization to operate (ATO) and demonstrated the resiliency of applications in the AWS GovCloud. Peraton demonstrated that key U.S. Army applications can transition successfully to the cloud, migrating its Total Ammunition Management Information System (TAMIS) to the cloud as a proof-of-concept and then into full production.

As a result of the U.S. Army using Peraton’s repeatable Application Transformation to Cloud (AT2C) process, TAMIS became the Army’s first fully operational Impact Level 4 application in a commercial cloud environment. Army is now able to balance costs and performance by leveraging the elastic features of the cloud paying for higher-priced, on-demand resources only when used.
